The Audi virtual cockpit is a driver-focused digital instrument cluster designed to combine a central MMI monitor and conventional instrument cluster in brilliant clarity with a unique 12.3-inch TFT display. The first fully-digital display offers graphics with a 3D impression and razor-sharp detailed effects in high-contrast quality.

Drivers are free to select from two views by pressing the “View” mode via the completely redesigned MMI interface selector wheel. Regardless of view, each displays outside temperature, time, and mileage as well as warning and information symbols:

  • Classic view:  The circular instrument dials, such as the speedometer and rev counter, are more dominant. Infotainment features reside in the background.
  • Infotainment mode: The navigation map, telephone, Audi connect, and media titles become prominent, while the circular instrument dials are much smaller.

The multimedia interface (MMI) control concept is based on consumer electronics that drivers are already familiar with, yet simplifies those functions to enhance user experience, making them more compact and efficient. In addition to the rotary selector wheel, drivers can access a natural voice-operated control system when making virtual cockpit commands.

The function buttons next to the rotary controller have been reduced from four to just two, simplifying and streamlining processes even more. The rotary controller operates like a joystick, so a gentle push to the left opens the function menu. The right side touch acts like a right-click on a mouse revealing several menu options.

In addition to a joystick-like rotary controller, multi-touch gestures allow drivers to zoom in and out on maps, and a search feature in infotainment mode allows drivers to quickly find what they are looking for with ease.

Dynamic vehicle animations and images from the reversible camera add valuable information to help drivers make smart decisions. No matter what function is displayed on the virtual cockpit, Audi is the only auto manufacturer to benefit from such advanced technology.
