Baby, You Can Drive My Car: Beatle George Harrison’s Porsche to be Auctioned

I want to be famous, a star on the screen

But you can do something in between

Baby, you can drive my car

Yes, I’m gonna be a star

Like many people in Leeds, England, Raj Sedha had heard the lyrics to “Drive My Car” by The Beatles many, many times. It may have even played on the radio that day in 2003 when he purchased a broken down 1980 Porsche 928 for spare parts. Mr. Sedha was on the verge of dismantling the classic sports car when his wife looked at the original registration and saw the name of the first owner. Hearing it read aloud, the name “George Harrison” didn’t click with Mr. Sedha at first, so Mrs. Sedha replied “The Beatle! You can’t take the car apart for spares!”

The legendary guitarist for The Beatles purchased the car new in 1980, one of more than 100 sports cars he owned while living at his estate known as Friar Park in Oxfordshire. Sold three years later, the Porsche changed hands a few times, with the gravity of the name on the registration eventually being lost until it was realized by Mrs. Sedha.

Once aware of the significance of the car, the plan to pick the car apart was thankfully scrapped, and it is now fully restored. Even without its historic provenance, this Porsche 928 S Coupe is unique, as the interior features a rare black on black leather stitching instead of the usual black/red or black/cream combinations. The 4.7L engine has been rebuilt and restored, and it is expected to fetch up to £20,000 (approximately $24,400) when it hits the auction block later this year.
