Just as quickly as the MP4-12C got a replacement in the form of the 650S, a brand-new model is on its way to replace the 650S. No official details have been announced just yet, so we’ll have to wait until its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March, but there are a couple of things we can tell you now.
A New Powerplant on McLaren’s Supercar
First off, it will have a larger 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 instead of the outgoing 3.8. In all likelihood, it’s the same base unit bored and possibly stroked to accommodate 200 more cubic centimeters, but McLaren could go all out and surprise us with an entirely different engine. Power output figures are anyone’s guess, but with the expected use of the 720S moniker, we can almost certainly say it will have about 720 horsepower. Internally known as the P14, it’s probably going to be faster than the 675LT as well, not just the 650S.
New Design Direction for McLaren
McLaren recently released the only official image of the engine bay along with the brand-new engine, illuminated by red LEDs. Whether that was done purely for the picture or it’s there for aesthetic reasons is unknown. A “leaked” image of the car is circulating the Internet, supposedly taken from a high-end McLaren event where potential customers were invited to take a look at the car. If that picture is anything to go by, expect the P14 to look radically different to McLaren’s current lineup. (Post has been updated with the latest imagery release from the official McLaren USA website).
McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt claims the new car is a revolutionary leap forward. Based on predictions and known facts, we’re not doubting him for a second. This car could be the next major thing, not just for McLaren, but for the entire automotive sector. Look for it at The Auto Gallery when it lands.
