This 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR is a Piece of History

Eckhard Schimpf, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0

A student of racing history will know the importance of the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. It stands out as an impeccable feat of engineering, even today. In its day, it boasted specs of 280 horsepower and 215 foot pounds of torque from its flat 6 engine. It weighed only 1,850 lbs., and it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. The RSR had a top speed of 178 mph, and it’s easy to understand why it would be such a force on the track.

It’s natural to venerate such a car, and one man went above and beyond to do so. His name is Eckhard Schimpf, and once upon a time, he was the manager of Porsche’s greatest racing team.

“You only know what these moments are like if you’ve been behind the wheel yourself.”

There was a period from 1972 to 2000 when Jägermeister Racing dominated race tracks all over the world. The orange livery was unmistakable, a large white square with black numbers on the doors and the Jägermeister stag emblazoned on the hood. The team was represented at all kinds of races—endurance events, circuit races, hill climbs, even Formula 1.

Eckhard Schimpf was team manager of the Jägermeister crew until 1982. A journalist by trade, he balanced his responsibilities between two families, one at home and one at the track. Schimpf often took the wheel himself and 39 of the 84 races he entered in his career. His vehicle of choice: a bright orange Porsche 911 RSR.

His memories behind the wheel of the RSR are what inspired Schimpf to bring the team back together. Since 2007, he and his son Oliver have worked to reacquire all the old cars. It figures that the most elusive would be his own RSR.

Porsche has Schimpf’s full story, including an account of his reunion, covered on their corporate blog. We encourage you to read it and study it for what it is – an invaluable piece of racing history.
