Why the McLaren 570GT is the Sports Series’ Most Practical Model

The new McLaren 570GT is every bit the kind of top flight sports coupe you expect from Woking. As the latest car in McLaren’s Sports Series, the 570GT is engineered with performance equivalent to its peers and designed for practicality unlike any McLaren before it.

It makes sense to begin with the specs, which many will recognize from this car’s sibling, the 570S.

  • Engine: 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 M838TE
  • Power: 562 hp
  • Torque: 443 lb.-ft.
  • Transmission: 7-speed seamless-shift
  • Dry Weight: 2,976 lbs.
  • Top Speed: 204 mph
  • 0 – 60: 3.4 seconds

Added comforts like full leather upholstery make the 570GT slightly heavier than its counterpart, but in its class, it is still impressively lightweight. As with Sports Series models, the 570GT features a MonoCell II carbon fiber cockpit that weighs only 165 lbs.

The car also features unique aerodynamics, including a fixed rear spoiler and body-colored door inserts along the sides.

The 570GT is McLaren’s Most Road Friendly Model

While it will still perform admirably on the track like its compatriots, McLaren designed the GT for surpassing practicality on the road and in the day-to-day.

The MonoCell II has been modified with lower door sills to make it easier to get into and out of the cockpit, while the 570GT retains McLaren’s dihedral doors that open up and out. The seats inside are adjustable in 8 ways, and climate and infotainment are managed via a central touchscreen display.

The 570GT’s standard exhaust system is 3 decibels quieter than that on the 570S, but if you still like to hear engine noise, sport exhaust is an option. The cabin is also lined with additional noise canceling materials, and even the standard Pirelli P Zero™ tires make use of the new Pirelli Noise Canceling System to keep road noise out of the interior.

Most noticeable is the addition of a Touring Deck luggage compartment over the engine. This leather lined space totals 7.8 cubic feet and is accessed by a side-opening glass hatch. The 570GT also keeps the front storage compartment from the 570S with a capacity of 5.3 cubic feet. In total, that means this McLaren model affords owners more storage space than a Ford Focus.

Manufacturer suggested retail price for the McLaren 570GT is $199,850, and the first cars are expected for delivery later this year.
